| THE STORY JUPITER WAS THE RIPEST FRUIT TO BE PICKED and everyone knew it. Mercury, Venus, the brood, even Saturn whose alcohol laced conception and oxygen deprived birth could comprehend the gravity. There were rules after all. Some were written, many were oral, and the need to coagulate all of them in one cohesive written language has been the debate for centuries. But like a confessed and convicted child molester whose actions would make even the most zealot death penalty opponent question there intentions, Jupiter's indolence made even the elders question their seemingly immovable position on writing down the laws. In theory, they ran in cadence with any religion: "Do good, be good, spread goodness." There were, of course, obvious aspects that branched from that root that could be interpreted as being in direct conflict. They were Vampyre after all. This is why the elders never wanted to pinpoint the rules, the laws or even the stories (legend, myth or otherwise). They knew their histories were as delicate and complex as snowflakes and to somehow combine those histories in one volume, or even a series of volumes, would be the equivalent of trying to weave together a million cobwebs to make some glorious translucent blanket. What a wondrous blanket it would be, but what purpose would it serve… that has always been the question. To solidify an existence that for all practical reason does not need excuse? To exalt the elders to a god-like stature in a clan whereas all members were, by nature, god-like anyway? Perhaps simply to document, thus justifying, the brilliant and miraculous acts of the clan. All of these reasons seemed too narcissistic to the elders, too irreverent at the core. They warned the apostles of documenting their adventures, their dreams, their visions… but their pleas, as always, were interpreted as folly. The elders knew the power of language and the pure infinite supremacy of the written word. Let he who puts pen to paper be aware of the responsibility of his tale. And the elders did not want to create tomes that could be used as an excuse for war. No. The elders did not want a bible. Simply tell the children to be good, do good, and spread goodness around. But then… there was Jupiter. And vampire or no vampire, he would never be able to interpret any gesture of authority as reason to abbreviate his emotions which were, unfortunately, directly connected to his actions. And with any creature that sustains life, his essence was defined and controlled by a higher power. It was the elder's decision not to substitute itself as that higher power, but to protect the existence of the clan. Jupiter's essence, in that sense, was threatening the extinction of Vampyre wholly. Something had to be done, something above simple death. Anybody could have "killed him" and many in the clan lulled themselves to sleep at the thought. But it didn't get to the root of the problem. Killing him without warrant would have made him a martyr, which in turn could sprout more like him. Thusly, warrant had to be made, and it became clear the reason to concrete their existence into some sort of Deuteronomous abridgment: to show the devastating effects of impudence. Hierarchical frameworks would be made, commandments solidified, reprimand swift. Knowingly following in the footsteps of their Christian brethren, the elders knew the impending threat of war with the existence of such a magnanimous tome. But it was decided, unanimously, to have the threat of implosion rather than the guaranteed extinction of all Vampyre by humans caused by Jupiter's indolence. And so it began... |
